Renato J. Quiliche Altamirano

Data Scientist · Ph.D. Candidate in Production Engineering, PUC-Rio

I build machine learning systems for risk, disaster management and public policy — and take them from research prototype to distributed production pipeline.

About

I hold a B.Sc. in Economics from PUCP and an M.Sc. in Production Engineering from PUC-Rio, where I am now a Ph.D. candidate. For the past six years I have worked on the design and evaluation of public policies, programs and projects.

My training in Economics gave me a strong statistical foundation, which my specialization in Production Engineering turned into applied data science: supervised learning, causal inference and spatial analysis used to build policy proposals grounded in socioeconomic evidence.

More recently my work has moved toward production-oriented engineering — re-implementing research models as distributed pipelines on Spark and Databricks, and building automated evaluation frameworks for LLM-based systems. I work well in collaborative settings where communication carries as much weight as the modelling, and I learn new tooling quickly.

Projects

Bitcoin Mining as a Real Option

2026

Time-series forecasting and decision analysis for a wind-farm investment

Replicated the real-options valuation of Bastian-Pinto et al. (2021), where a Brazilian wind farm can sell its early energy or mine Bitcoin, and verified the port path-by-path against the authors' code. Replaced the paper's GBM with a bagged power-law + halving-cycle forecast (STL, block bootstrap, mean reversion) and scored both against the realized 2019–2025 prices.

Three models gave three different investment recommendations; the realized path shows why the starting-level assumption mattered more than the stochastic process.

Distributed Disaster-Risk Classification on Databricks

2026

Scaling an M.Sc. dissertation model into a production-shaped Spark pipeline

Re-engineered my dissertation modelling stack as a distributed pipeline on Databricks, moving from single-node Python to Spark MLlib over 101K household records and 112 features. The pipeline chains VectorAssembler → RobustScaler → GBTClassifier, with cost-sensitive class weighting for a 1.4% positive rate and hyperparameter search via TrainValidationSplit.

Evaluation is imbalance-aware and computed with distributed Spark SQL aggregations (MCC, G-Mean, balanced accuracy, GIBAα). The fitted PipelineModel is persisted to Unity Catalog Volumes for reproducible reload and batch scoring.
